Throughout the summer, Joel Embiid has played the role of mediator in Ben Simmons’ dispute. He went to great lengths to convince the unhappy player to return to the Philadelphia 76ers, even hopping on a cross-country trip to do it.
Simmons, on the other hand, was not interested in picking him up at the airport. And it’s possible that the Sixers’ franchise center has had enough of the mental gymnastics. According to a new report (via Sam Amick of The Athletic), their on-court connection has “run its course,” and Simmons believes Embiid’s presence has hampered his game.
Yikes. There’s a lot to unpack there. Embiid didn’t hold back when asked about the rumors at the Sixers’ practice on Thursday (Sept. 30) (via Liberty Ballers). The Simmons scenario, according to the 7-footer, is strange and “borderline disrespectful.” And there’s an intriguing tidbit about a couple contentious roster changes hidden in Embiid’s lengthy and well written response. The one that stands out is Jimmy Butler, a Philadelphia fan favorite who defected to the Miami Heat.
To be clear, I like criticism and being told I can’t do something. It motivates me to try even harder to disprove everyone, but not everyone is created the same way.

Butler’s departure was hastened by Embiid’s desire for the Sixers to retain him, but Simmons’ insistence on becoming the main ball-handler on the court hastened his departure. Here’s what the MVP runner-up had to say:
Jimmy [Butler] was fired, which I still believe was a mistake… [Simmons] need possession of the ball. They came to that conclusion. As I have said, it seems unexpected, but I am entirely focused on the men present. The scenario is strange, frustrating, and almost insulting to all of the men who are fighting for their lives out here.
Embiid didn’t directly criticize Simmons, instead reiterating his earlier assertion that the club is better with the three-time All-Star. Keep in mind that the group is still hoping he will walk through the gym door.
We’re working hard to improve. Trying to get everyone on the same page. We know what we have to do, and we have to strive to accomplish it every day. But with him, we’re a better squad. There is no doubt about that. We’re still hoping he’ll change his mind, but I owe it to these people to focus on what we have here.

Shaquille O’Neal fires a volley at Simmons.
Since the Eastern Conference semifinals, when Simmons missed an open dunk, Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal has slammed Simmons mercilessly. He and his TNT colleague Charles Barkley don’t have tolerance for people who aren’t prepared to put in the effort. Especially with all of the cash in Simmons’ pockets.
Shaq is still pursuing Ben Simmons: “Is there anybody out there who wants him? I’m not going to spend $200 million for a player that won’t be aggressive and won’t shoot in the playoffs.” https://t.co/pNCXBksvhC

During a recent interview on CBS Sports Network’s “Tiki & Tierney Show,” O’Neal went off on Simmons’ handling of the situation. He had the option of keeping the discussions secret.
“He’s doing everything wrong,” O’Neal told SportsRadio 94WIP. “He could have gone into the office and told them, ‘Hey, my emotions have been wounded.’ You didn’t stand up for me, did you? I’d want to make a formal request for a trade.’ Is there anybody out there who wants him? I’m not going to spend $200 million for a player who won’t be aggressive and won’t shoot in the playoffs.”
