On the set of the film “Rust,” Halyna Hutchins died doing what she loved.
And that affection is being reciprocated as colleagues and friends remember the journalist turned cinematographer who died last week on filming in New Mexico when Alec Baldwin, the film’s star and executive producer, shot a pretend pistol. Hutchins was 42 years old when he died.
Joel Souza, the film’s director, was also hurt in the event.
In April, Hutchins took part in a Blackmagic Collective live broadcast where she discussed her filmmaking.
“I appreciate tales that are based on real events or real people,” she added, “but my favorite part is really inventing the universe in which the narrative will take place.”
Hutchins, a Ukrainian native, grew up “surrounded by reindeer and nuclear submarines” on a Soviet military installation in the Arctic Circle, according to her website. She graduated from Kyiv National University with a master’s degree in international journalism.
Prior to arriving to New York City, she worked as an investigative journalist in Europe for British documentary projects, producing feature films for the and Discovery.
“In New York, I really got into photography,” Hutchins said in a June YouTube interview for “Why Women Are Excelling in Hollywood.” “I did a lot of fashion photography and really wanted to do art films. Just something on a grand scale, something gorgeous, pure art house film.”
“I attempted to figure out what the next step would be when I went to Los Angeles,” she added. “When you don’t know anybody, where do you begin? What do you do first?”
Hutchins said she took a UCLA extension course on directing “simply to get my feet wet,” but she immediately realized she preferred cinematography over directing.
“I think I photographed maybe 15 shorts there,” she said. “So I continued shooting, and I figured that’s definitely what I’m meant to do.”
Hutchins worked for a lighting firm before enrolling at the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory, which she considered “the finest school for my industry” and graduated from in 2015.
Jensen Ackles, who co-starred with Hutchins in “Rust,” said on Instagram after her passing that he had given to an AFI scholarship fund in her honor.
“I felt obligated to tell Halyna how wonderful she was earlier in the week. I told her how amazing her camera pictures were and how much fun it was to watch her and her crew work “he wrote “Truly. She giggled and hugged me after saying thank you. I’ll be grateful for that moment for the rest of my life.”
Hutchins discussed what drew her to particular films during the Blackmagic Collective live broadcast.
“For me, the foundation of the characters is the most intriguing aspect,” she remarked. “If I can connect with the characters and go on a trip with them. It’s not so much about the genre as it is about the setting you build to express the character’s journey.”
“I’d want to create this movie if I want to watch it,” she remarked.
Hutchins offered a sincere response when asked what it was about cinematography that drew her in during the “Why Women Are Excelling in Hollywood” discussion.
“It’s definitely a passion,” she remarked. “Once you’ve caught the bug, there’s no getting out.”
