The origins of the West Texas A&M University football program
When the school was known as West Texas Normal College. The first team was assembled that year and played a handful of games against local high schools and colleges. The following year, the team began playing organized football in the Southwest Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SWTIAA).
In 1907, the team won its first conference championship and began playing its home games at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. The stadium was built in honor of Dr. Louis Kimbrough, the school’s first president.
The Buffaloes’ biggest rivals and how they stack up against one another
The West Texas A&M Buffaloes have a few rivals, but their biggest one is undoubtedly the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds. The two teams have been playing each other since 1924 and the rivalry is known as the “Wagon Wheel Rivalry.” The winner of the annual game receives a large trophy in the shape of a wagon wheel. The trophy is meant to symbolize the old west and the rivalry between the two schools.
The Greyhounds currently lead the all-time series between the two teams, 62-57-9. However, the Buffaloes have won the last four meetings between the two teams. The next biggest rivals of the Buffaloes are the Tarleton State Texans and the Midwestern State Mustangs. The rivalry between the Buffaloes and the Texans is known as the “Y’all Come Back Rivalry.”
