On October 22, Path of Exile will launch a new league called the “Scourge” which is based on Halloween. The event features a new map and some spooky surprises that players must endure in order to earn special rewards.
The Path of Exile’s spooky Scourge league offers tricks and treats starting October 22 is a blog post about Path of Exile’s upcoming Halloween-themed event, the Scourge League. The post includes information on how to start playing during the event.
New leagues and upgrades for Path of Exile arrive every three months, exactly like the seasons of the year. But it’s not often that one looks so good in the appropriate season! Scourge, the next expansion, will be released on October 22nd for PC and October 27th for consoles, and features demons and chaos. There’s also a blood rite to participate in. Scourge does seem like a scary addition to my Halloween festivities.
Chris Wilson of Grinding Gear Games showed a lot of the new twists and delights in this update. Let’s get started!
The Scourge is here to greet you.
What should you do if you come across a strange individual fleeing unknown terrors around Halloween? In the Scourge league, you get a rusted blood crucible that she offers you to implant into your body! Isn’t that completely reasonable? As you go through your journey, this beautiful crucible will gradually fill with the blood of your dead foes. Yes, this is an excellent activity at this time of year.
When the crucible is full, you’ll be taken to Wraeclast’s other reality, where the demonic Scourge is annihilating the planet. Visit a nightmarish planet and battle for survival? That’s very much how I spend my Octobers!
allowing blood to circulate
The crucible is the Scourge league’s primary mechanic, and it’s where players customize their gear. By putting a piece of equipment within the blood crucible, players guarantee that the item will absorb some corruption from the scourge’s Wraeclast foes. Players may turn the piece into a corrupted item with unique new Scourged modifiers after it’s full. But it’s not all treats; the secret is that one of the two is bad, while the other is good.
The good news is that you don’t have to accept the result: if you don’t do it right the first time, try, try again. Simply return that item to the crucible and kill more until the corruption fills up again, allowing you to perform a second and even third transformation. However, the third time must be the charm or you will be stuck with the result; objects may only be changed three times in total. The fact that “each time it ensures a minimum tier of helpful and harmful modifications equal to the number of times it has been changed,” as Wilson phrased it, is a nice bonus tossed into the mix. “By the third layer, you’ll be able to obtain some pretty strong effects.”
Another perk is that you may utilize corrupted objects in the crucible. New tainted versions of chromatic orbs, jeweler’s orbs, and orbs of fusing discovered in the alternative Wraeclast may even be used to change sockets. It’s considerably cheaper and simpler to obtain them than it is to attempt to fix tainted goods with a crafting bench.
Players will be able to put points into the crucible’s own passive skill choices, further personalizing their transformation possibilities. Every talent can be unlocked, but it will require a lot of killing.
Finally, much as with gear, you may throw maps into the crucible in the endgame to receive positive and harmful effects on them. “It may also acquire a modification that completely alters the behavior of Scourge league in that map,” Wilson said. Maps, unlike equipment, may be changed up to ten times. Be mindful that, rather than replacing the prior effects, the new ones may complement or even stack with them for more punch.
Collect the goodies
When you think about it, Path of Exile is the epitome of Halloween: the whole purpose is to go out and gather treats! It’s the same when it comes to going to the new nightmarish reality. Wilson observed, “You’re not there to rescue the world; you’re there to discover interesting stuff.” Scourge adds six new uniques, new skill gems, and six new special link gems to the game.
Wilson informed me that three of the uniques would be accessible via the drop tables, while the other three will be obtained through special content (which will be described at a later date). The amulet Uul-Vow, Netol’s discovered in the particular content, enables players to convert any six-linked body armor into a seven-link, allowing them to select any support gems they choose, even corrupted or awakened.
Wilson claims that two of the new skill gems are whole new ideas that can be used to construct completely new builds right away, one is a utility skill that aids players, another is a variant of another, and the other six are especially intended for party play.
Energy Blade does exactly what it says on the tin: it transforms physical combat weapons into energy weapons. Tornado, for example, generates a tornado that rushes relentlessly towards opponents and pulses with damage. Poisonous Concoction, a sister of Explosive Concoction, has been added to the family, dealing poison damage instead of fire.
If you’ve ever wished for a fast undo button in POE, the Temporal Rift utility ability enables you to rewind your character’s state by four seconds, returning them to their previous location, life, mana, and energy shield levels. Players must, however, be proactive in their use of it; first, they must activate the Temporal Rift to begin the saving process (savings occur every quarter second), and it will only rewind you when you activate the ability again.
The connection skills are a fascinating new idea. These don’t connect to anything on you, but rather to another player! These six link abilities create a unique connection between you and a particular party member that benefits them greatly while they remain within range. Of course, there’s a ruse here as well: The disadvantage is that if they die, you will as well. Half of these new jewels were highlighted by Wilson (the other three will be disclosed later):
- If you have a soul connection, a portion of their damage is diverted to your shield instead.
- Protective link – the victim gets a chance to defend against assaults similar to yours.
- When a spell you socketed hits an opponent, it will activate an intuitive connection.
Beyond the Agony
Of course, each Path of Exile expansion contains more than simply a new league. Scourge adds a passive skill tree overhaul, passive masteries, endgame upgrades, and guild hideouts to the main game, which we’ll discuss next.
