XP boosts are an in-game mechanic that increases the amount of experience points players gain by playing certain games. This is commonplace for massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) titles like World of Warcraft, but has never been seen before in gaming outside of MMOs until now.
“Content purchased with real money in Marvel’s Avengers will be aesthetic-only upgrades, which will guarantee we can keep the game fresh for years to come,” a dev blog from Marvel’s Avengers creator Crystal Dynamics said in August of 2020.
Fast forward to Wednesday’s update article, which revealed the addition of a Consumables section, which contains Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors that can be bought to increase XP rates or materials profits for three or seven days.
As one would imagine, the game’s fanbase is furious over the move, to the point that the game’s whole Reddit is flooded with rage, memes, and dissatisfaction over the choice. The subreddit’s administrators have even begun creating a megathread for complaints and views, urging users to vent their frustrations in a polite way. One specific post, in particular, captures player response in a single, simple picture.
Remember when the XP gain in Marvel’s Avengers was nerfed because players were “too overwhelmed and bewildered” by how fast they were leveling?
They’ve just introduced paid XP boosters to their cash store, so you can now buy some of that delicious, sweet overwhelming bewilderment for a cheap fee. twitter.com/LtU7AWiIPx
