Officials call a halt to the game between Brazil and Argentina.
Fifa says it “regrets” the events that led to the postponement of the World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina, which prevented “millions of fans” from seeing the game.
The match on Sunday was called off shortly after it began because three Argentine players had broken quarantine regulations, according to Brazilian health authorities.
Fifa said that it has received the first match officials’ reports, which would now be examined by “the appropriate disciplinary bodies.”
The rescheduled match is yet to be scheduled.
“Fifa regrets the scenes leading up to the suspension of the match between Brazil and Argentina for the Conmebol qualifiers of the Fifa World Cup 2022, which prevented millions of fans from watching a match between two of the world’s most important football nations,” the governing body of football said in a statement.
“Fifa has received the first match official reports. The appropriate disciplinary authorities will examine this material and make a judgment as soon as possible.”
Fifa president Gianni Infantino encouraged Europe to be flexible in its thinking in order to assist South America overcome its qualifying backlog in a video speech to the European Club Association’s general assembly.
It comes after the UK government turned down Infantino’s plea for players to be granted quarantine exemptions so they could fulfill their international obligations.
“In the United Kingdom, we are in a tough position. Players must return to their home nations to play for their national teams “he said
“The South American players remained with their clubs in March, but now they must compete in national team qualifications.” That is why I asked for a show of support.
“We need to offer hope to nations whose greatest players are only seen when they play for their national teams.” “We must safeguard the World Cup.” September was not perfect; let us find the proper balance for October, November, and next year.”
On Sunday, the match between Brazil and Argentina was called off after just five minutes.
What went wrong?
The match at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo was called off after five minutes when Brazilian health authorities arrived on the scene.
The extraordinary action occurred only hours after Brazil’s health officials announced that four Argentina players living in England would be quarantined.
Visitors who have spent the previous 14 days in the United Kingdom must quarantine for 14 days upon arriving in Brazil, according to Brazilian regulations.
The players with English Premier League teams are Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa, and Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero of Tottenham Hotspur, despite the fact that the four were not named. The game was begun by Martinez, Lo Celso, and Romero.
The four players allegedly supplied “false information” and “failed to comply” with local regulations, according to the Brazilian health agency Anvisa.
It stated that after discovering incorrect information on Friday, it conducted a meeting on Saturday with the “institutions implicated” to notify them of the necessity to quarantine.
Regardless, the players practiced on Saturday night. Anvisa enlisted the assistance of federal police to impose quarantine on Sunday, but their efforts were “frustrated.”
The squad had been in Brazil since September 3 and had followed all health procedures, according to the Argentine Football Association, while Brazilian Football Confederation head Ednaldo Rodrigues chastised the health authorities for their timing.
Conmebol, the regulatory body of South American football, issued a statement around an hour after the game was halted, stating that the contest had been suspended.
